Dear s. McKenzie:
i’m a HUGE fan of FRED ASTAIRE and have only just retired after working for 53 years at various jobs including singing popular songs [got Mr.A's permission to perform "Not My Girl" in my club act years ago], stand up comedy and working most recently as a social worker for the past 17 yrs with welfare moms and in a homeless shelter! So now that i’m retired i’m reconnecting with my love of FA and have just read the book the ASTAIRES Fred and Adele, I’m reading every single last word of John Mueller’s Fred Astaire DANCING and I have all the DVDs of FA/GR’s 10 magna opera and can watch any dance I want at will. Nevere when I was 12 years old did I even THINK I could OWN a Fred Astaire film Now I own most of them. Still will I could get “The Pleasure of His Company” and “Damsel in Distress”.
Anyway, in the FA/GR films there are nice interview EXTRAS that include lovely exerpt with Ava A. McKenzie and I am fancinated by all she remembers of her loving dad. Her dad and mine both died on june 22nd. Therein ends the similarities except my dad used to dance with me. My grandmother remembers seeing Mr. A. and Adele in Lady Be Good in NYC and she got me interected in him. She thought he was “top drawer” and “perfection”. Would love to be on any mailing list about FA or join any club about him or go to any conference and meet others who enjoyed his wonderful joyful talent.
thanks, and you DO sound lovely Ms. McKenzie. bet he loved you lots. how come no mention of fred , jr? he must have said “keep me out of this”, huh? I can imagine. Did he change his name? Well, i guess that’s why he would probably want to be kept out of the lime light. His dad’s tap shoes were too big to fill. And people like me too curious to know things that are none of our business. Sorry.

Hi Beth:
Ava has become a friend and is indeed, a lovely person. I’ll pass along your comments to her and let her know how much Fred has meant to you throughout your life.
Thanks for listening to Jazz Inspired! Where do you pick up the show?
Happy Fall!

I’d like to express my greetings to Ava Astaire McKensie. I’m sure she won’t remember me, but I’ll never forget her. We were both students at the Westlake School for Girls in Beverly Hills, in the late 50′s. I was 3 years behind her. Discovering who she was – Fred Astaire’s daughter – I was mezmerized by her. She was statuesque, dignified, interesting. I’d look at her at school and wonder what it was like to go home in the evenings and have dinner with – Fred Astaire. I longed to befriend her, but was too timid. But I watched her at school and envied her life. Once her father served my girlfriends and I ice cream. True story. We were at a “Ticktocker” luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Fred Astaire walked by (was probably at the hotel’s Polo Lounge), and we girls complained we were waiting for our dessert. A moment later he returned carrying bowls of ice cream with chocolate sauce. I have no idea where he got them. But it’s a fun memory… I’ve always wondered what happeed to lovely Ava, now I have a better idea. If she ever sees this message – well, I wish her all the best. She was a star to me, the daughter of a star. I hope her life has been happy. My 50th. Westlake class reunion is next month. I wonder if she’s kept ties to our old girls’ school…? All blessings Ava, I’ll never forget you. Yvonne Powell Dunbar April 26, 2013, Seattle, WA.
Thrilled you enjoyed the show and I’ll be sure to pass along your greetings to Ava.
